about this exhibit

In my last installation, I included pieces composed from images shot in the gardens at our house in the context of imagery suggestive of spirituality, thinking of the garden as a "holy" place of sorts, and of gardening as something meditative. The images of "ordered chaos" springing from the pots and boxes on my roof stuck with me so well that this year I thought I'd try revisiting that theme, except with the summer's fotojournal focusing exclusively on the garden.

The images in this collection were created between February 1998 and January 1999, from images captured as digital stills and analog video between February and October 1998.

The flower and plant images are of my wife's garden, in our backyard, and of the second-floor roof garden I keep outside the window of my studio at our home on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC. Other images include architectural detail of the Reptile House at the National Zoo, and frames from the live TV coverage of the launch of space shuttle STS-95.
